College student life is a time of transition. Most family health plans require adult children over the age of 18 to carry a full time load of classes, and be under the age of 23 to remain on the family health insurance. When shopping for a Student health insurance policy for you and your family, it pays to shop around and get multiple rate quotes from different companies. College students, may not be covered on their family's health insurance policy, assuming they live away from home. If this is the case then it's time to look into student health insurance.

Health insurance for college students is something that every family with a college student away form home should have. College students actually have a high rate of injury, and viruses can spread quickly through college dorms.

Fortunately, the cost of student health insurance is very reasonable. A college student away from home without health insurance can easily spend more money on health care for the flu or a broken arm than the cost of a student health insurance policy itself.

Parents looking for student health insurance usually have two options: an independent individual policy from a private insurer (such as Blue Cross Blue Shield, Golden Rule, Humana etc. ), or the standard college student health insurance package offered by the school. (Not all schools have these, but most do.)

The school's student health insurance policy may be the less expensive option, but the terms of coverage will likely be less flexible. An individual health insurance policy from a private insurer for college students will probably offer more coverage options, but may cost more out of pocket.

In either case, coverage is very reasonably priced, and it's not a bad idea to comparison shop. Don't just go with the first policy the school offers.
